Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Ethan Allen (E.A.) Mayes, Jr.

Ethan Allen (E.A.) Mayes, Jr., 76, of Oxford, died peacefully and gently on Saturday, February 26thafter an arduous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. E.A. was surrounded by his wife of 46 years, Dee Mayes, and his children, Heather Mayes Newton of Oxford and Doug Mayes of Apex. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Aubree, Ethan and Ella, his daughter in law, Megan Mayes and his son-in-law, Stephen Newton.

A lifelong resident of the Providence community, E.A. was the son of Ethan Mayes, Sr. and Flora Byrd Gooch Mayes. He graduated J.F. Webb High School in 1964 and attended N.C. State University’s Agricultural Institute before returning to his family farm raising beautiful tobacco and vegetables while operating a mechanic’s shop. Later in life, he returned to N.C. State University retiring as a maintenance foreman at their Butner research farm.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 3,2022 at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 PM officiated by Reverend Cameron Currin.

E.A. spoke kindly to his neighbors, greeted strangers as old friends, told funny stories, danced, laughed and made Granville County’s best Brunswick stew. Always one to enjoy himself, the family asks that you remember E.A. by cooking on the grill and listening to music. Alzheimer’s disease may have robbed E.A. of his last years, but it does not diminish the joy of his life. Given his love of animals, the family invites you to make donations to the Granville County Animal Shelter in lieu of flowers.

Visitation will be held at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford from 12:00 – 1:30 PM.

Dee we are very saddened to hear about EA’s passing. He was such a very kind and giving man. My husband always enjoyed talking to him, and my mother n law knew him thru her years in school and you both were there before and after her husband died to give comfort to us all. Always had a kind word to say and stories to tell. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten. Hope God gives you comfort and peace during this difficult time. God bless you all. Heaven is sure rejoicing with EA there. Love and prayers to you all! 🙏🏻❤️ Jimmy & Tammy Jackson, Shirley Jackson& Family
