David Winston was born in Granville County to Charlie David Winston Sr. and Helen Elliott Winston on Edgewood Plantation in April of 1931. David graduated from Stovall High School and attended Wake Forest College for two years. He married Eunice Royster on October 16th, 1952. David and Eunice raised two daughters in Grassy Creek, Rebecca, and Jean Marie. Both grew up to become successful professionals in health care and business and create families of their own.
David enjoyed his life as a Farmer and a Merchant. North Carolina recognized the Winston family farm as one of the oldest continuously operated farms in the State. David and Eunice ran the farm for 50 years raising, tobacco, corn, soybeans, and timber. While running a successful farm operation, David and Eunice also owned and operated the Winston Self-Service Store serving the Grassy Creek community for more than 30 years. David was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing, and anything done outdoors. His passion was raising and running the most successful hunting dogs in Northern Granville County. David was a lifelong member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and Committee chairman. David was also a long-standing member of Adoniram Masonic Lodge in Cornwall, NC.
David is survived by his wife Eunice, daughter Jean Marie and Colonel Howard Borst, brother Julian and Nancy Winston, sister Marion Winston Dean, granddaughter Lauren Marie Borst, and close family friend Laura Ascencio. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Merle Matthews and Carolyn (Major General Mack Hobgood.) David is preceded in death by his parents, brother Elliott, daughter Rebecca Winston Desrosiers, sisters-in-law Vivian Hart, Tura Lee Sonnett, Beth Vaughan, brothers-in-law Willie Royster, Bobby Royster, and Francis Dean.
The family of David Winston wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the medical staff of Duke Hospital, Maria Parham Hospital, and Kerr Lake Rehabilitation Center. We are especially in debt to the compassionate nursing staff of Maria Parham hospital.
David “Grasshopper” Winston was well-loved in his community, and we are blessed that he positively touched so many lives. David is affectionately called “Grasshopper” by his hunting partners and “Grandpa” by dozens of children that he has loved and mentored over the years. Everyone will miss him.
