Michael Scott Phillips Jr. “Scotty”

Michael Scott Phillips Jr. “Scotty”, age 23, of Oxford NC. passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 4th 2021.

Michael was the son of Scott and Jennifer Phillips and loving brother of Caroline. He was born and raised in Granville County where he graduated from J.F. Webb High School in 2015 where he was a proud Warrior Athlete. He lived and worked in Oxford for several years after high school, before following his love for the water and moving to Wilmington to be close to the sea. Michael was a craftsman who enjoyed working in plumbing and construction where he could see the results of his hard work.

He was an avid sportsmen, fisherman, and lover of dogs. If you knew Michael, you knew his blue eyes, contagious smile, and beloved dog, Levi. Michael never met a stranger! He got along with all types of people. He enjoyed making others laugh with his charismatic personality and witty sense of humor. Michael tried to live his life to the fullest and always wanted to make others happy. He loved his life, but loved the people in his life most of all. Michael would want us to remember the good times, cherish the laughter we all shared, and live each day better than our last. Our family is so proud of the gains Michael achieved in his short life here on earth; and we look forward to our eternal life together with him again in Heaven one day.

His parents, Scott and Jennifer Phillips, his sister Caroline, and maternal grandmother Jan Satterfield of Roxboro, NC and a full family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, survive him. Michael also leaves behind many loving friends who had a special place in his heart, including a support group of friends in Asheville and Wilmington.

A walkthrough visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13th from 1:00-4:00 pm at Oxford United Methodist Church. We ask that everyone please wear a mask and adhere to the COVID guidelines that will be in place to allow us to be safe. A private family memorial will be held at a later time.

Though this was never the outcome we prayed for, we know in our hearts that Michael would want us to continue to help others. A scholarship has been established in Michael’s name to help others afford recovery. Your donation can be made to “The Launch Pad” and mailed to: 5001 Wrightsville Ave. Wilmington, NC 28403 ( in memo line of check, put The Scotty Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund).

Living next door to the Phillips family in Oxford (2002 – 2016) was a joy. We often bragged to each other that “we” had the best neighbors in the world. I have many fond memories of Scott, Jennifer, Caroline & “Michael”. Sending thoughts & prayers out to his friends, and to his wonderful family, and may Michael be at peace now!!!!

Mike was a great friend. I remember his blue eyes & big smile coming down the hallway. He was so sweet & cool. I remember cheering my good friend on at football games (I was a cheerleader). I pray for his family. Love you Mike❤️

Scott & Jennifer, The beautiful obituary captures the true essence of the Michael we knew. He was a very well mannered, respectful young man which reflects your great parenting. We will treasure the many memories of our traveling baseball days when we watched “Micheal P” play his heart out and his visits to our home to go fishing with Ethan. I fondly remember the last time I saw him, the conversation and hug we shared as his face lit up with beautiful smile he always seemed to have. What joy it is to know that we will all be reunited one day. God has healed Michael and taken him in His care. May God carry you thorough this difficult time as only He can.

As a young student returning home from college, one of my early assignments as a Behavior Specialist was at what was then Mary Potter Intermediate School (MP). One of my colleagues was Mrs. Phillips. My afternoon duty station was in front of the school. I remember well a young “Scotty” getting off of the bus from the elementary school and meeting his mother at MP. I walked him to the bottom of the steps of the 4th grade hall and his mother would be waiting at the top of the steps. He was always quiet, well mannered and polite. His demeanor was always pleasant and his sense of humor was very unique. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
