John Wayne Yount

Rev. John Wayne Yount, 72, of Stagecoach Road, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Rex Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1947 in Durham County to the late John Ray Yount and Lora Mae Yount. He was a small business owner and pastor at Stovall United Methodist Church for 42 years. He was ordained in 1968 and served churches in Aurora, NC and Fayetteville, NC until he moved to Oxford. He loved his family and his church and was his happiest when he was riding his horses. His grandchildren were most precious to him and he always enjoyed seeing them. He will be greatly missed by many because of the lives he touched throughout his ministry.

Due to Covid-19, a private family memorial service will be held at Stovall United Methodist Church. Livestreaming will be available to view the service at 3PM on Sunday May, 24, 2020. You may access the funeral service by clicking on the following link:

We grieve for our son-in-law and his family in the loss of a truly great man who was a wonderful pastor, husband, father, grandfather, horseman, and friend to so many. John W. Yount provided divine counseling to countless couples and individuals over a lifetime of unselfish dedication and service to the Kingdom of God. While we are left with a void which cannot be filled, we know that he will live forever in our hearts and he will be richly rewarded in God’s Holy Kingdom. ⛪️ RIP John and God Bless Connie and Your Family 🙏🏻

John, you were certainly a man of God. You held several revivals for our church and truly brought the message of salvation through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You were down to earth and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather with a love for all God’s creatures especially horses. You will certainly be missed. Prayers for your family from Edward and Velvet Woodlief

John and I graduated from Northern High School in 1966. We served on the same destroyer although at different times. He was a great classmate and true Patriot.

My heart is broken for Connie and all the family. What a great loss for all Rev. Yount’s family and friends. I cannot even count all the times our family has called on him to preach a funeral for us. He was always there for us and happy to serve Our Lord and his friends. He did it because he was so good and kind, but I also know he never wanted to miss a chance to preach God’s word and try to reach some lost person at a funeral. Maybe someone who never visited church any other time. I will never forget him and all he did for so many for so long. Truly one of my favorite people in all the world…He is with his Savior now and free from any sickness or pain. Sending our sympathy and love to you and your family, Connie. You will be in our prayers in the days ahead.

I first met Pastor John in 2004, we were living in Va at that time and would come on weekends to visit family. We would go to church and in the summer my boys would attend VBS. John didnt know it at that time but he helped me through the loss of one of my babies and later that year the loss of my mother.Later he helped us find our property in Oxford. When the house was finished he blessed it before we moved in. In 2006 he baptized my boys and helped me through another loss of a baby. He encouraged me to keep going while I held down the fort as my husband was still in the Navy and gone on tours of duty. Finally he facilitated Les’s retirement in 2008. He helped welcome my baby girl in 2009 and later that year baptized her. She came to call him her Big Papa. She loved him so and will miss hearing him on Sundays. Will will all miss him but know we will see him again. Love to the Yount family from the Ramsays
